Delete your data
What data exists for your install
Before deletion, the records linked to your install on our servers are limited to:
- App-install ID — a random identifier the app generated on first launch.
- Android advertising / app-set ID — provided by Google Play services, used only to deduplicate analytics.
- Aggregated usage analytics — screen views, feature taps, session lengths, app version, OS version, device model.
- Crash reports tied to the install ID — stack traces and technical metadata for app crashes.
- Server access logs — IP-derived approximate location (country / city), request paths and timestamps, kept up to 30 days.
- Search queries typed in the app — kept in aggregated form for up to 90 days.
Bookmarks, saved cases, highlights and downloaded PDFs are stored only on your device — not on our servers. Uninstalling the app removes them automatically.
How to request deletion
Option 1 — In the app (fastest)
- Open SheriaNet.
- Tap Settings → Privacy.
- Tap Delete my data.
- Confirm. The app sends your install ID to us and the deletion is queued.
This also disables analytics on that install going forward.
Option 2 — By email
- Open SheriaNet → Settings → About and copy your install ID (it looks something like
sn-3f8a9b22-...). - Email [email protected] with the subject "Delete my SheriaNet data" and paste the install ID in the body.
- If you have already uninstalled the app and don't have the ID, email us anyway with the approximate install date, the device model you used (e.g. "Tecno Spark 10, Kenya"), and we will purge the closest matching analytics records on a best-effort basis.
- You will receive an automated acknowledgement within 1 business day, and a confirmation when deletion is complete (within 30 days).
What gets deleted
On a verified request, we permanently delete the following from our active systems within 30 days:
- The app-install ID and any advertising / app-set ID stored alongside it.
- All crash reports tied to that install ID.
- All analytics events tied to that install ID (in our analytics provider, Google Firebase, via the Firebase deletion API).
- Server access-log entries identifiable to that install or device fingerprint.
- Push-notification tokens for that install, if any.
What we may keep, and for how long
For legal, security and operational reasons a small subset of information may be retained, as follows:
- Encrypted backups — up to 35 days after deletion, then automatically overwritten as backups rotate.
- Aggregated, fully anonymised analytics (e.g. "X searches were run last week") — kept up to 14 months. This data is not linked to your install and cannot be used to re-identify you.
- Abuse / fraud-prevention records — if your install was blocked for violating our Terms, a one-way hash of the relevant identifier may be retained indefinitely so the same actor cannot evade the block. No personal content is kept.
- Tax / payment records — only if you ever bought a paid feature; in that case, Google Play (the payment processor) and our accounting system retain transaction records for the period required by Kenyan tax law (currently 5 years under the Tax Procedures Act).
How long deletion takes
- Active systems: within 30 days of your verified request.
- Backups: deleted automatically within a further 35 days as backups are rotated and overwritten.
Just want to remove the app?
Uninstalling SheriaNet removes everything stored on your device (bookmarks, downloaded PDFs, settings). It does not automatically purge the analytics records on our servers — for that, use Option 1 or Option 2 above. To stop receiving notifications, turn them off in Settings → Notifications or in your Android system settings.
