Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information the SheriaNet mobile application ("SheriaNet", "the app", "we", "us") collects from your device, how we use it, and the choices you have. The app is published on Google Play by WadesLabs, a software studio operated by Edgar Agayi, based in Nairobi, Kenya.
1. What we collect
1.1 Device identifiers
- App-install ID — a random identifier generated by the app on first launch. It lets us count unique installs and tie crash reports to a specific install. It is not your name, email, phone number, or Google account.
- Android advertising ID / app-set ID — provided by Google Play services. We use it only to deduplicate analytics events and detect abuse. SheriaNet contains no ads and does not use this ID to target advertising.
1.2 Analytics & crash data
- Usage analytics — which screens are opened, which features are used, and how long sessions last. Used in aggregate to improve the app.
- Crash logs — when the app crashes we collect the technical stack trace, app version, OS version, device model, and the install ID, so we can fix bugs.
- Approximate location — derived from the IP address your device uses to reach us, at country / city level only. We do not collect GPS or precise location.
- Search queries typed in the app are sent to our search backend so we can return results. Queries are not linked to your real-world identity (we do not have it) and are kept only briefly in aggregated form.
1.3 What we do NOT collect
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, SMS, call logs, photos, files, microphone audio, camera images, GPS location, health data, financial account numbers, or any other personally identifying information. The app does not contain advertising SDKs and does not sell data.
2. How we use what we collect
- To run the core features of the app (search, browsing cases, downloading judgments).
- To diagnose crashes and improve performance and reliability.
- To understand which features are used so we know what to build next.
- To detect and prevent abuse (e.g. bot-like usage from a single install).
- To comply with applicable law and lawful requests.
3. Legal basis
We process the limited data described above on the basis of (a) legitimate interests — to keep the app working, safe and improving; and (b) legal obligation — where we must respond to lawful requests. This complies with the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019.
4. Sharing
We do not sell data. We share the limited information described in section 1 only with:
- Infrastructure providers who host the app's backend (cloud servers, database, file storage), under contracts that limit them to processing data on our instructions.
- Crash & analytics providers — Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics. They receive the install ID, device model, OS version, app version, and event names. They do not receive personal identifiers because we do not have any.
- Authorities, where compelled by a valid Kenyan court order or comparable legal process.
5. International transfers
Our servers are located in Kenya and the European Union, and our analytics provider (Google) processes data in jurisdictions including the United States. By using the app you consent to your data being transferred and processed in those locations, with industry-standard safeguards (TLS in transit, encryption at rest).
6. Retention
- Crash logs — kept for up to 90 days, then purged.
- Aggregated analytics — kept for up to 14 months in anonymised form, per Google Firebase defaults, then purged.
- Server access logs (IP, request path) — kept for up to 30 days for security and abuse detection, then deleted.
- Search-query logs — kept for up to 90 days in aggregated form, then deleted.
- If you submit a deletion request (see /data-deletion), the records tied to your install ID are removed within 30 days.
7. Security
Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted with TLS 1.2+. Backups are encrypted at rest. Access to production systems is restricted to a small number of named engineers with multi-factor authentication. Because SheriaNet stores no account, name, email, or password, the impact of any breach is intrinsically limited.
8. Your rights
Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 and similar laws you have the right to access, correct, or delete the limited data we hold tied to your install. Because we do not have your name or email, the way to exercise these rights is to send us your install ID (visible in the app under Settings → About). See /data-deletion. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner of Kenya (odpc.go.ke).
9. Children
SheriaNet is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child's device data has been collected, contact [email protected] and we will delete the records associated with that install ID.
10. Permissions the app requests
- Internet — to load cases, statutes and updates.
- Storage (scoped) — to save downloaded judgments for offline reading. Files stay on your device.
- Notifications — only if you opt in.
11. On-device data
Bookmarks, saved cases, highlights, recent-search history, and downloaded PDFs are stored only on your device. They are not uploaded to our servers. Uninstalling the app removes them.
12. Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the latest version. Material changes will be highlighted in-app on the next launch.
